ISSUE 13: CREATURE FEATURE

ISLANDIA X THE PYTHON HUNT

"It's alive! It's alive!"

A creature feature is a subgenre of horror or science fiction films in which protagonists face physically monstrous antagonists, such as cryptids, alien invaders, enormous animals, or supernatural beasts.

Florida is a breeding ground for these contradictions; its flora and fauna exist in a space between native and preternatural. Fun fact: Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) was shot primarily in Wakulla Springs, FL.

But in The Python Hunt documentary, the creatures of the Everglades are real, and the human creatures chasing them might be just as fascinating.

For Issue 13, THE PYTHON HUNT X ISLANDIA asks South Florida artists to share their interpretations of a creature, whether they be monstrous in size, silly, visually disturbing, uncanny, or horror-inducing.

In partnership with the director of The Python Hunt, Xander Robin, & photographer Josh Aronson, The Islandia Journal presents:

A python recipe from The Python Hunt star, Toby Benoit

A wearable frogfish sculpture

The history of python news in The Miami Herald

Monstrous collages

Swarms of murderous ants

Q&A w/ writer, archaeologist, anthropologist, and cryptid researcher Bob Carr

The truth about the woman who created the Gill-man

So many swamp photos by Josh Aronson & more!
